So much for unity

After President Obama delivered his inaugural address, Reverend Joseph Lowery delivered his benediction - apparently straight out of a time machine that arrived from the year 1965:

“We ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right,”

Apparently the good reverend felt compelled to dive into the very poetry pool that Elizabeth Alexander - the “free verse” poet who preceded him - so carefully avoided.

As it turns out, Lowery’s words will become the most memorable part of this otherwise forgettable event.

“…when black will not be asked to give back…”

Are you kidding me, Reverend Lowery? In the age of affirmative action set asides, when a black man has just been inaugurated as President of the United States, you have the effrontery to say this?

“…when brown can stick around…”

I assume by “brown” you are referring to  the folks from south of the border and elsewhere in Central and South America. I have no problem with any of these folks sticking around, Rev. Lowery - if they are here legally. But then, I suppose you have no problem with illegal immigration. Then this may very well be your lucky day, as indicators are good that the border will be opened even wider than before. After all, ACORN is anxious to register new Democrat voters.

“…when yellow will be mellow…”

In The Return of the Pink Panther a botched assassination attempt on Inspector Clouseau sends his faithful valet Kato to the hospital. Clouseau lamented to Chief Inspector Dreyfus that “they nearly blew off his little yellow skin.”  I guess you are referencing our Oriental Asian friends from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and the Pacific Rim. Are they not mellow? Ought we to dispense Xanax or some other palliative to calm them down?

“…when the red man can get ahead, man…”

Like, WOW, man. Groovy. I dig. Except that American Indians Native Americans are opening up casinos - where they rake in the loot TAX FREE  - faster than falafal stands are being set up in Baghdad. And here’s the real kicker: it was the aboriginal inhabitants of this continent who introduced white Europeans to the joys of tobacco - which they sell dirt cheap in their casinos and reservations - thereby securing their revenge by inflicting nicotine-related death on a sizable percentage of the white population.

“…when white will embrace what is right…”

Approximately 600,000 Americans - most of them white - perished in one of the bloodiest civil wars in history to secure the freedom of black people. Hundreds more perished at the hands of the Klan and other violent bigots defending that freedom over the course of the next century. In the year 2008 a significant percentage of the white population you appear to disdain voted to elect President Obama for no reason other than the fact his father was black. How dare you say this?

Time to retire, Reverend Lowery. If they have not already done so, perhaps your congregants can purchase a million-dollar home for you - as Rev. Wright’s congregants have done for him. Perhaps it will be located near a Native American casino…I hear the all-you-can-eat buffet is to die for.

  3. Quick Peabody, to the Wayback Machine!

Convenient that the whole of his little poetry is all about success and progress and getting what people want… except the “white” portion, who apparently has been embracing evil for countless milennia. For shame. /iSarc

I was hoping that after the brain-blasting we’d gotten during the election regarding race issues, the Dems would have at least the iota of sense required to notice that - hey, the race card’s getting pretty worn around the edges, might want to shuffle the deck. No dice. I shouldn’t get my hopes up like that. Silly me.

The more things Hopenchanje!!, the more they stay the same.

  4. One of Terry Goodkind’s books, “Soul of Fire” I think, portrays this kind of thing. There, a minority destroyed a nation by playing on guilt for actions of generations past.
Actually, I would recommend all of his books, particularly “Faith of the Fallen.”

Hey, Grue. Haven’t heard from you in a while. Did you give up posting on Hot Air?

WOOT!!! Someone else who reads Sword of Truth!

And yes, that was Soul of the Fire where that happened. I’ve been quoting extensively from Goodkind’s works lately, as it’s disturbing how much of it is extremely familiar to what is going on in reality right now.

To the unfamiliar, Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series - eleven books in all, starting with Wizard’s First Rule - is essentially a fantasy fiction version of Atlas Shrugs and its ilk. It’s Ayn Rand with pointy objects and wizard’s fire.

Yeah, pretty much. Took a break from posting as was my custom for a month or so, and by the time I was ready to come back Manly had this place under construction so I was waiting in the wings. ;)

  7. Once the main website comes up I may talk to Manly about putting in a books section - a sort of “Recommended Reads” catalogue by the members. If so, Sword of Truth will be the first submission, I assure you. :)

  8. I haven’t read a Sword of Truth book in a while–I think the last one I read was “Pillars of the World.”
In my opinion, they are a lot better than Atlas Shrugged, though they don’t quite have the insight into the corruption inherent in a command economy.
Also, the third part of Atlas reads more like a superhero comic book, but with the main characters as the villains out to rule the world.

  9. Ouch, the next one - Naked Empire - is one of the best as far as politics and relevance to the real world goes.

And I enjoyed them more than Rand as well, but that’s mostly because I prefer fantasy fiction to historical fiction, so it’s more a matter of taste. As far as their message goes, I like both authors equally.
