In 1962 an oil well firefighter by the name of Paul Neal Adair - better known to posterity as “Red” Adair gained international fame when he successfully capped a 450 foot high pillar of flame nicknamed “The Devil’s Cigarette Lighter” that burned in a gas field in the Sahara Desert. Some years after that, he capped the largest oil platform fire in North Sea drilling history.

During the Gulf War - at the ripe old age of 75 - Adair successfully capped numerous well fires set by the forces of Saddam Hussein in the wake of their retreat from Kuwait.

After he returned to Houston, Adair and some his buddies headed to their favorite watering hole to down some brews (alcohol is forbidden in Kuwait). As they sat at the bar recounting their exploits, a fellow sitting toward the end of the bar kept staring at Adair - as if he recognized him.

After half an hour of being unable to figure out who he was, the fellow - who had pounded down quite a few brews on his own - approached Adair and slurred out, “Hey buddy…I (hic) I know you from somewhere. I mean…I….(buuuuuurp) I ‘ve seen you someplace. You…youuuuu are somebody famous, aren’t you?”

The old firefighter smiled and replied, “Sure am. I’m Red Adair.”

The drunken fellow slapped his hands together in glee. “I KNEW it!” he exclaimed. “Holy shit…THE Red Adair. It’s an honor to meet you.”

The fellow grasped Adair’s hand and shook it vigorously as he laned in close and whispered in his ear “So tell me, Red Adair…are you still banging Ginger Rodgers?”
