A New Drum & Fife Corps

Katy, a friend of Manly’s Republic with whom I marched in the Great 912 March on Washington D.C. wrote me today to inform me that she has formed a new drum and fife corps in Kerrville, TX - about 60 miles northwest of San Antonio.

I was so inspired marching with the fife & drum corps and the re-enactors in DC last month that I recruited several members of my homeschool band.  As you can see, we are still working on equipment and right now have to use “modern” drums, but hopefully soon we’ll have a fundraiser to buy authentic drums as well as more tricorn hats!

We played for the first time to open the local “Conservative Lunch Bunch” meeting and hope it’s the first of many.

Just as many of the Revolutionary War drummers and fifers were young, our group ranges in age from 10 to 18.

Doing my part to raise the next generation right,
Katy

P.S.  We’re still working on a name for our group.  Rebecca (standing next to me) suggested “Bleeding Eardrums Fife & Drum Corps,” but that sounds more like a rock band!

Here’s an idea for a name: The Kerrville Young Patriot Fife & Drum Corps.

Anyone else have a suggestion?

Thanks for the news, Katy, and I wish you and the newly formed corps Godspeed. I look forward to seeing all of you at next year’s march.

  1. Thanks, Col. Rash! I like the “young patriot” idea so well that I think we might even start a Young Patriot group to go with the corps!!

  2. What about: The Texas Hill Country Fife and Drum Corps - Young Patriots Division.

That way you appeal to a much larger region that has many small towns and to young and old patriots.

  3. Yeah, Currville will make people think of 20-20…

    Good going, Kate

  4. Katy,
YOU DID IT!!! I’m sooo excited! It’s Linda who marched next to you in the parade. My brother John and I feel like the proud parents of a new fife and drum corps!
You guys look great! Just remember that not all corps have uniforms that are exactly alike. Some go for the mismatched look. And if you join the Company of Fifers and Drummers they can loan you colonial rope tension drums until you can afford to buy your own. They also sell music books (I recommend books 1 and 2) to get you started.
As for the name, I think you’ve picked a good one. It says who you are and what you stand for. It’s a lot like ours (The Fifes & Drums of the Delaware Militia) or (Tea Party Fife & Drum Corps) stately yet not too involved. I hope you still have my card so that we can keep in touch.
    Linda Moss

  5. Thanks, Linda! Yes I do still have your card and have been meaning to contact you. You and your brother (and your daughters) can definitely consider yourselves the inspiration that birthed this new fife & drum corps! :)
